Today when most of our daily routine is confined only within our home and we all feel an urge to go out in nature, fell the air and most of all escape the stagnant feeling of not feeling happy or sad. It is more like a vacant or void deep inside. An urge of change of what you are doing, what you are feeling.
That is how many people define Boredom. Some people label it as human habit, so they do lot of practices to escape boredom, for an instance, distracting themselves in some social channels, like scrolling on Instagram, Facebbok, Snapchat and mostly on YouTube.
Why people get bored?
Mind becomes monotony:
Boredom relates to mental fatigue which occurs by the recurrence of an action or event. Insufficiency of attentiveness in details of our task creates a monotonous life, for example task which needs continual attention, task like staying in a room like in quarantine situation, stand by for train or buses or flight in airport.
Whichever
practice that is unsurprising or predictable and monotonous become the
reason of getting bored. So, if I portray
in simple words, boredom is occurred by doing the same thing most of the time
and very little refreshment may be caused to the person. An absence of wish and desire,which ultimately
results in the feelings of isolation or entrapment.
Lacking in Flow:
Total immersion in a piece of work creates a state of flow. If a task that is energizing as well as challenging and resembles to the concerned person's abilities then a flow of work is created, like "forming a zone for himself and ultimately resulting in being in zone".
The occurrence of flow happens when one's skills resemble the amount of challenge introduced by the surrounding of that person or the environment he works in. The task which shows a clear vision of goals and quick feedback. Jobs which are too easy are the reason of boredom. On the contrary, works that living being perceive to be too hard leads to involvement and excitement.
Demand for Novelty:
Boredom also vary from person to person. Some individuals very easily get bored in situations wherein others live that type of lifestyle with excitement. These group of people, who have strong necessity of excitement, novelty, passion and variety of work, are at great risk of boredom.
These agitation seekers (example: travelers, film stars, skydivers), slowly start realizing that this world is too slow-moving. These type of sensation seekers most of the time are in the need of external world stimulant and if they do not get it, they fall prey to boredom.
Risk-taking and novelty-finding is the way that external world attention seekers create to self-medicate and overcome their feeling of getting bored.
This type of medication sometimes create a loop hole, i.e. when
they are stuck to one type of lifestyle due to any situation, they start
having suicidal thoughts, or an urge to get drunk or drugged, to get the feel of excitement and adventure in life. People who lack self sufficiency face more boredom.
Need of paying attention:
Boredom and
attention are inter-related and inversely proportional. If you start getting bored, you also parallely decrease your attention. There is a saying that "What’s
bore you, will never capture your attention fully", which is also
understandable as it is difficult to be in interested mode when it’s hard to concentrate on that particular thing.
People
having chronic attention disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,
have a higher tendency of boredom.
Aware Emotionally:
Individuals who have shortfall in self-awareness are more vulnerable to boredom. A bored living being is unable to eloquent his or her wish or desire for what to create and participate in it.
They are not good at expressing their emotion, their interest and the feeling which may excite them in long run. An incomprehensible inability to not know what excites you or makes you happy, leads to profound existential of boring lifestyle.
Not understanding what you are searching for results in a habit
of lacking the volume of thoughts to decide appropriate goals with which you will get engage with the current society trend.
Skills
for Inner Amusement:
Imagine a person who always depend on external stimulation and lack inner methods and resources to deal with boredom. So, when these type of people get into situation where external world fails to provide enough excitement and novelty, they always feel something is missing in their life and never are able to find the missing part until and unless they realize that they need to work in their inner amusement skills. They should learn to enjoy their own company and be minimalist in practices of living.
Autonomy Deficiency:
People feel more bored when they sense they are constrained or trapped. It could be their job, relation with partners and family or surrounding, anything that make them realize that they are trapped there and it will eventually bore them.
They are stuck or trapped in something in which their
self-will cannot be carried out. This is mostly observed in teenagers in their adolescence
period where they feel their control on life has been taken by their parents
and teachers and they are not able to do what they really want to perform.
Role of culture:
In many ways, boredom is a problem faced by today’s society and of their modern luxury. Boredom was denotation nonexistent until the late 18th century. The enlightenment of boredom was occurred in industrial revolution in old human history.
Our elders
and ancestors had to spend most of their days securing basic living needs such
as food and shelter, at that time boredom was an unknown concept for everyone.
Modern society where people work more for fulfilling their luxury even after their needs are achieved, create an Environment where mental fatigue come after some point of time by overdoing of work which may or may not be liked by them.
Once they get tired they want to rest but nothing excites
them as their inner peace is in race to grasp an unidentified target which
keeps on increasing every time you come near to it and that stagnant feeling creates boredom in today’s world.
How can I get rid of Boredom?
Get Creative:
You can get creative by doing the following
things-
- read books
- paint, color, sketch or doodle something
- practice writing a list
- do creative writing
- make gifts for friends or family members
- use objects of households to create crafts (best out of waste)

Reading can ease you from self composed thoughts of stagnancy which causes you boredom. When you read a good book which interests you, it helps you to enter in the author's world and their your mind stop doing the work, imagination is an never tiring process.
A person can dream all day. Reading novels, stories, articles etc, send you or provide you a mental vacation. Reading books nurtures the inner child inside you who enjoy the process or imagination and also love what he or she does. It
also awake the felling of wonder and nostalgia when you go through your favorite paragraph in book which relates with you.
Being fruitful
when boredom hits:
- need of understanding that boredom result in restlessness
- make exercise and workout a daily routine
- yoga calms your inner soul and help attain inner peace.
- study new skill
- start gardening
- do planning for upcoming events and travels
- re-organize your surrounding
- practice something physically that you have been postponing
Communicate with others:
- play online games with loved ones or friends
- play simple outdoor games
- hangout out in places where you can talk to others
- rematch old games, movies with friends and family
- go shopping at cheap store
- pretend to be tourist or seekers in own town
- photo shoot
Communication is the best way to ease out your frustration,
anger and boredom. It helps to have a passage through which you share yourself
with others, like friends, family in coffee shop. You can amuse yourself
by playing game, meeting new people on social media, shopping new material you like.
Seeking the world around you with new perspective around you would provide you a new vision, once you start talking and sharing. Bored people never talk, if you talk it helps you understand the world.
Looking for methods to have fun:
- watch cute and funny picture online
- cooking and baking
- make unique mix songs
- dance
- looking though old photos
- enjoy funny video online
Leave those boredom at some corner of your house, and live for yourself and relive your childhood with looking at old photos, enjoying any comedy video, and play your own songs.
Avoiding Boredom:
- be aware that high arousal states can contribute to boredom
- get off the internet, computer, or couch
- avoid day dreaming
- keep a schedule of your day
- be social
- take breaks to keep tasks from becoming burden
- quiet your workspace
- regulate your blood sugar
- stay active
- get a job or volunteer
Try to connect to society with your own definition, how you
want to contribute to society or how you want to live your life. When you leave
the table of your work, let the society know your real work by avoiding the day dreaming.
If you are aware of your work may or may not lead you to boredom. What we all need to understand is getting bore is nothing to be ashamed of. It gives you an urge to do work and make
you realize that you have had enough rest. Now is the time to take charge of your life and change the world once you enter the stage. Follow the passage and ESCAPE BOREDOM.
