Hypnosis is a fancy term which is often misunderstood as a Psychiatrist's game. In reality it is a harmless way to achieve great success in life. Let's dig deeper into What Hypnosis really is?
Human brain is divided into three parts, Unconscious, subconscious and conscious. Subconscious is a part of conscious mind but does not stay alert, it has the memory which is accessed by the conscious mind as and when needed. The unconscious mind holds the processes in mind which are not available to introspection and happen automatically, like thoughts, memory, and motivation.
Hypnosis is basically a human state of mind where in your subconscious mind is brought to attention and focus. In this state you are fully aware and your mind can respond to the suggestions given to it very positively. It's like planting a chip inside your brain and making your brain act as the chip instructs. Your brain accept to all the suggestions given to it in this state, without having any rational thinking about it. Scary right?
Yes this can be both positively and negatively used. Now imagine if you plant a strong belief in your subconscious mind that you are qualified enough to use your potential to the optimum level and can achieve great heights of success in the field of work you do, then your brain starts acting towards it from the very next moment. This in other words is said belief. If you believe in yourself and keep repeating to yourself that you can do it then one day you surely will achieve what you want. That is why great sages say "Belief in yourself and you can change the world."
Now, what if I say that this state of mind can be achieved by you yourself. You don't need a hypnotist to hypnotize you and access your subconscious brain, but you are qualified enough to perform it yourself and put positive thoughts and determination in your subconscious mind. Interesting?
Yes, this can be done by Self Hypnosis. Now the question arises on how to perform self hypnosis?
Hypnosis is performed by reaching a relaxed state where the deeper part of the mind can be accessed to rewrite or reprogram our subconscious mind. Your mind keeps thinking, always. Right? It does not matter it's true or false but it perceives what it believes. Whatever our mind believes will be what we experience to be true or real. Now, Hypnosis is all about creating a belief. The main ingredient of hypnosis is using your imagination with total conviction to create a belief to the point that it becomes a real experience.
This is similar to what happens with us in our Dreams. I will explain this with some simple examples. Did you ever have a nightmare? Have you ever woke up perspiring or shouting? Now that was the imagination which felt so real that you actually had a physical reaction to it. It was your mind who created this imagination and believed in it making it feel so real that you had physical experiences of panic, whereas it was all in your head and not the reality. Our experience was created out of our belief.
Now, you can create a belief in your mind. Whether or not it's true or real, does not matter. It's about creating such a strong belief that it feels real.
For explaining this I will ask you to do a simple activity. Before doing this I will request you to get rid of all doubts in your mind. Just believe in it. Let's start. Keep your phone on the desk and join both your palms together. And focus hard on your hands. Draw all your attention to your hands and keep repeating to yourself that your hands are stuck together so hard that you can not pull it apart. Repeat it to yourself again and again and as you repeat it press your palms hard together. Say to your mind that your palms are stuck together, they cant be pulled apart. Believe in it without any doubts. Now after 5 mins of repeating it to yourself and fixing this in your mind, try to pull your palms apart. Magic! You will not be able to pull apart your hands. You will find the more you try to pull them apart the more they are stuck to each other. Now, say your hands can get apart in a count of 3, then count down and Boom! you will be able to release your palms.
There two possibilities of the outcome of the above activity:
- Your hands were really stuck because you believed it to be stuck. You created a false reality and believed in it, and the activity really worked for you.
- Your hands did not stick and you could easily pull them apart, because while doing the activity you had a doubt in your mind. Throughout the process your brains raised questions will it work or not and did not believe in it so the activity did not work out. For you, I would say that try this activity again keeping all your doubts away. It will surely work.
Either of the outcomes was a result of what you were holding in your mind while performing it, that is exactly what you experienced. This is how simple hypnosis is. Create a belief in your mind by repeating the things to yourself again and again and believe in it. Those who believed in it, for them this would have felt like a magic trick. Right?
Believe that your life has so much purpose and value and you are an amazing human being. There is no one like you in history nor there is going to be anyone like you ever. Keep repeating it to yourself. And do this every day. In no time you will see the results. You will find great improvements in yourself.
Here again, if you say yourselves that your life is meaningless and has no value, your mind will believe it and that will become your reality. Mind believes what it thinks. And what it believes becomes your reality. Don't let your thoughts control you, rather you control your thoughts to create your own reality.
Steps to follow for Self Hypnosis:
- Sit in a calm environment.
- Close your eyes and focus on your surrounding. Focus on every detail and become fully aware of your environment.
- Be relaxed, feel comfortable.
- Now after reaching a relaxed state repeat to yourself whatever you want to believe in. Say yourself what an amazing person you are. Put all positive thoughts, hope, and determinations in your subconscious brains. Set your goal and say to yourself that you will achieve it.
- Repeat this again and again.
- Then slowly come out of that state and open your eyes.
- Practice this every day.
You will find magnificent changes in your character, behaviors, and positivity will be filled inside you, after a few days of practicing. Yes, it's that simple.
Everything in this world is possible only if you believe in it. It's rightly said "Impossible is a word found in a fool's dictionary" . So create your own imaginations, frame your thoughts and that will result in actions and experiences.
Advantages of self hypnosis:

Disadvantages of self hypnosis:
People with psychotics symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions or people on drugs or alcohol, have adverse effects of hypnosis on them and should not try self hypnosis.
Some rare cases also have symptoms like:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Distress and anxiety
- Creation of false memories.
If you are not on drugs or alcohol nor have any psychiatric history then you should and must try self hypnosis to improve yourself. Your personality defines who you are. Always remember the things we see around are there because someone believed in it. Imagine what would have happened if Wright Brothers did not believe in Airplane or Graham Bell had a doubt about inventing Telephone or Thomas Alva Edison did not believe that bulb can be invented. Edison failed 6000 times before the invention of the bulb but he never let a single strand of doubt build in his belief. Car, train, laptop name anything, it's all a reality now because someone believed in it without any doubt.
